The Reality Check

If anyone tells you they made $10k in 30 days clipping gameplay, they're selling you a course. This playbook is the opposite of that.

Read this before anything else

  • First dollar lands month 4-7. Livable income ($2-5k/mo) lives at month 12-24. Replacement income ($4k+) is month 18-30. Plan accordingly.
  • Posting clips alone won't do it. TikTok pays ~$0.30-0.60 per 1k views in gaming, and you can't even apply until 10k followers. Use it for discovery, not income.
  • The platforms that pay at small scale aren't the ones that pay at scale. Twitch and Kick pay subs from day one. YouTube pays SEO-compounded long-form. Stack them in that order.
  • Your friend group is the only moat you have. Don't try to out-polish full-time solo creators. Be the channel where the audience knows the friends by name.
  • ~70% of gaming creators stall at 100-500 followers and quit in the day-60 valley. If you survive that, you're already in the top 30%.

Critical Decision

Pick One Game

Generalists grow 3-4× slower than specialists. The algo needs to bucket you. Pick ONE primary game for 90 days. Branch only after you hit 5k followers.

Niche Status (2026) Why
Marvel RivalsHungry algoHero-mains niches wide open, content ecosystem still settling
Cozy gamesHungry algo$973M market, 675% Steam growth since 2020, lowest production bar
Hardcore SoulslikeHungry algoOpinionated, hungry community (Elden Ring DLC, Lies of P, Lords of the Fallen)
Indie launchesHungry algoRiding launch-week algo bumps. Pickups + first impressions.
Retro / emulationHungry algoAI-resistant niche. Modern commentary over classic games.
Fortnite / Warzone / ApexSaturatedCompeting with full-time creators. Possible but brutal.

Avoid These

Why Most Stall At 500 Followers

Every dead channel follows the same pattern. The single biggest predictor of breakthrough: did they survive the day-60 "nothing is working" valley.

The 7 ways gaming creators kill themselves

  1. Inconsistent posting. 3 days on, 2 weeks off. Algorithm deprioritizes you within a week of silence.
  2. Generalist niche. One Fortnite clip, one Minecraft clip, one Apex. Algo can't bucket you, so it shows your stuff to nobody.
  3. No hook discipline. Still using "hey guys what's up" intros. Mobile viewers decide in 800ms.
  4. Watermarked cross-posts. Uploading the TikTok-watermarked file to Reels and Shorts. 30-50% reach penalty.
  5. Production-polish trap. Spending 4 hours on one clip instead of shipping 4 clips. Quantity beats polish at small scale.
  6. Vanity-metric refresh loop. Checking analytics every 30 minutes in the first 90 days kills creative output.
  7. Quitting at the first plateau. Every channel plateaus at 200, 1k, 10k. Breakthroughs come from changing format, not posting harder.
